How much is the NHS prescription charge?

The standard prescription charge in England is currently £9.35 per item on your prescription (sometimes there
are exceptions).

Check with your pharmacist for more information on your prescription charges.

Are you eligible for free prescriptions?

Depending on age or circumstance, some people are entitled to free NHS prescriptions. This may include those who:

  • receive certain benefits
  • have a valid maternity exemption certificate
  • have a valid medical exemption certificate
  • have a valid war pension exemption certificate
  • have an HC2 certificate (NHS Low Income Scheme)
  • have paid for a prescription prepayment certificate
  • are over 60
  • are under 16 (or 16-18 and in full-time education)
